The 4Cs of Diamonds

Because diamonds are forged in nature, no two are exactly alike, and the specific quality of diamonds can vary. For that reason it’s important to understand how to determine what makes a diamond more valuable, and thus more desirable. In the diamond industry, the criteria are referred to as the 4Cs:

  • Cut: diamonds are formed naturally, but when they are cut into a specific shape that’s done by a person. The more skilled and precise a diamond cutter, the more sparkly your diamond will be.
  • Color: diamonds come in a range of hues from yellow to brown (other natural colors are referred to as “fancy” diamonds and graded differently). Colorless diamonds are extremely rare, but grading is based on how close they are to being colorless.
  • Clarity: the inclusions—or blemishes—in a diamond will impact its clarity grading and a diamond with several inclusions or large inclusions may look hazy. It’s hard to find a diamond with absolutely no inclusions, and most inclusions cannot be seen without looking at it under magnification.
  • Carat Weight: a carat is a metric measurement equal to 0.20 grams, subdivided into 100 points. It’s an objective measure because it’s just on the physical weight of the diamond.

Why Go for GIA-Graded Diamonds?

Show the sincerity and commitment behind your declaration of love with jewelry that’s studded with stunning certified diamond rings in Utah from AAA Jewelers. We have a team of GIA-certified gemologists who ensure that you’ll get diamonds of the highest pedigree. When you buy your diamonds from us, you know that you will never end up with a mis-graded stone.

The Gemological Institute of America, also known as GIA, is an independent non-profit institute dedicated to research and education in the field of gemology. They provide non-biased evaluations of diamonds using sophisticated procedures and instruments, based on the4Cs of diamond quality —clarity, color, cut and carat weight.

When it comes to pedigree, GIA-graded diamonds are of blue blood. As diamonds are such an important (and not to mention expensive) purchase, going for a GIA-graded stone lets you know you got your money’s worth.

How Do You Know Your Diamond is Real?

Your GIA diamond rings in Utah should come with a diamond certificate. This is a report that confirms the characteristics and authenticity of your specific diamond. It should contain the following information:

Shape, Style or Cut: This states your diamond’s style and shape characteristics, e.g. round brilliant.

Measurements: This reports your diamond’s physical measurements.

Proportions: This highlights your diamond’s value in terms of durability, culet, girdle, weight ratio and tilt.

Finish: This describes your stone’s symmetry and polish, relating to how smooth its facets are. The placement and uniformity of the diamond’s facets are also assessed when determining its finish.

Color: Gemologists grade your diamond on a scale of D (colorless) through Z (colored). A different color scale is used for true fancy colored diamonds.

Clarity: This indicates any inclusions or blemishes your diamond may have.

Cut: The most important of the 4Cs, the cut is perhaps the most valuable offering of a GIA-graded stone. Depending on its quality, your stone’s cut will receive a rating of excellent, very good, good, fair or poor.

Diamond Certification

Gemologists are responsible for certifying diamonds, which means they verify that a diamond is either 100% natural or “enhanced” (meaning they are lower quality but were artificially treated to make them appear to be higher quality). Certification also verifies that the diamond meets specific standards for the 4Cs: color, cut, clarity, and carat weight.

It’s important to keep the certification document with the diamond in the event you want to get it appraised, insure it, or sell it in the future. Also know that a certification is not the same as an appraisal; the certification provides specific characteristics of the diamond, while an appraisal calculates the current market value.

Unless you are an experienced gemologist, buying a certified diamond ring in Utah can provide reassurance that you are getting the quality you are paying for.
